Pete Baumann has been in the golf industry for over thirty years, starting in 1971 when he helped develop Lake Shastina Golf Resort at the foot of Mt. Shasta in northern California. Pete and his associates purchased the 18-hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Pete designed the Scottish Nine, a par 35 shorter course utilizing natural grasses and sage.
He served on the club’s Board of Directors for the next eight years. Pete won his Men’s Club Championship nine times in fourteen years and the Northern California Men’s Amateur Championship twice.
In 1987, Pete founded Probe Golf, Inc., builders of custom fit golf clubs for pros and amateurs alike. Beginning in 1991, Pete specialized in custom fit PROBE drivers. He noticed that all brand driver faces at that time measured 16 inches radius of "bulge," with flat “roll.” His PROBE driver heads were designed with 10 inches radius of bulge and 10 inches radius of roll. There was more curvature on PROBE driver faces than on any other drivers in existence at that time. Everything else being equal, PROBE driver heads gave an added 2.5 seconds of carry time and 28 yards farther distance off the tee! Numerous PGA Tour players, including Johnny Miller, asked Pete to ship them PROBE driver heads monthly.
In the next few years, there were 23 victories on the Senior PGA Tour by pros using the PROBE driver. It took the rest of the golf industry three years to catch on to Pete's innovation.
In 1993, He invented golf’s first and only inverted-shafted putter, the PROBE 20/20, produced a 30-minute infomercial starring Gary Player, and sold over 80,000 PROBE 20/20’s to the golfing public. One of the first Senior PGA Tour professionals to use the PROBE 20/20 on tour was Mr. Arnold Palmer.
In 1994, Pete was a “+2” handicap considering joining the Senior PGA Tour, but an accident and resulting wrist injury led to ligament reconstruction surgery and brought his handicap up to a 6. Pete switched to the Natural Golf grip introduced by Canadian Professional Moe Norman, and, to this day, Pete teaches the Natural Golf grip and swing to his students.
At a Probe Golf Board of Directors meeting, the idea for providing a special “reciprocal play” service to the private country club industry was born.
